Hope Community of Shalom History

The Shalom Readers after school program.
Shalom originally began as a response by the United Methodist Church to the Los Angeles riots of 1992.  The church established shalom zones, or peaceful places, in the city to enrich the lives of children.
In 2002, the Shalom Program began in Lubbock as an after school program for Dupre Elementary School students.  Twice each week, students came to the Asbury building for a snack provided by the South Plains Food Bank, homework assistance from adult volunteers, and literacy activities. Many of the volunteers were retired schoolteachers and area college students.
The Asbury United Methodist Church building was bequeathed to the Community of Shalom, Inc., a nonprofit organization, in 2005.  The Shalom program continues, and space is intended for community outreach and use by other nonprofit organizations.
